What do I need to get started?

To get started with Goodstead you generally need:

  • To be at least 18 years old
  • To be a resident of the United States
  • A valid Social Security Number (SSN)
  • A working email address and mobile phone number for verification
  • A U.S. bank account you can link for deposits and withdrawals

During brokerage onboarding you will also provide personal, address, employment, and financial information required by Interactive Brokers.

What account types does Goodstead offer?

Goodstead currently supports:

  • Investment account — a taxable brokerage account for general investing goals
  • Retirement account — an IRA for retirement savings, with Traditional and Roth options

Each plan is linked to a brokerage account at Interactive Brokers and invested according to the portfolio you select.

What is the difference between an Investment account and a Retirement account?

Investment account

  • Designed for general investing goals
  • No IRA contribution limits tied to the account type
  • You can typically deposit and withdraw more flexibly
  • Investment gains may be taxable in the year they are realized

Retirement account (IRA)

  • Designed for long-term retirement savings
  • Available as Traditional IRA or Roth IRA
  • Subject to IRS contribution, withdrawal, and tax rules
  • Often includes beneficiary designations as part of setup

Choose the account that matches your goal. If you are unsure which IRA type fits you, review IRS guidance or speak with a tax professional.

How do I open an Investment account?

To open an Investment account:

  1. Finish your Goodstead registration and email confirmation.
  2. Complete the Interactive Brokers application from Home (identity, address, employment, financial profile, and agreements).
  3. After submission, open Accounts and create an Investment plan.
  4. Answer the risk and goals questions, review the recommended portfolio, and confirm your selection.
  5. Connect your bank account and make your first deposit when funding is available.

You can follow pending tasks and brokerage status from Home and Operations.

How do I close an account?

If you no longer need an Investment or Retirement plan:

  1. Open the plan from Accounts.
  2. Review any pending deposits, withdrawals, or brokerage tasks in Operations.
  3. Use the account closure flow on the plan page and follow the on-screen steps.

Closing an account may require waiting for pending transfers to finish and for the brokerage to process the request. Remaining investments are typically sold so cash can be withdrawn to your linked bank. Goodstead does not currently offer an in-app transfer of holdings to another brokerage.

How do I open an IRA?

To open a retirement account with Goodstead:

  1. Complete brokerage onboarding if you have not already.
  2. From Accounts, create a Retirement plan.
  3. Choose Traditional IRA or Roth IRA.
  4. Complete any beneficiary steps required for your plan.
  5. Answer the questionnaire, select a portfolio, and deposit funds when ready.

IRA eligibility, contribution limits, and tax treatment depend on your situation. Goodstead helps you open and invest the account; it does not replace personalized tax advice.

Are my investments insured?

Interactive Brokers is a member of SIPC. SIPC protection is designed to help customers if a brokerage firm fails. It does not protect against investment losses when markets decline.

Brokerage cash and securities are not FDIC-insured. FDIC insurance applies to deposits at banks under separate rules and limits.

Investing involves risk, including the possible loss of principal. Diversified portfolios can help manage risk, but they cannot eliminate it.
